As the other Jamaican artistes like Koffee and Demarco whom singer Rihanna enlisted to feature on her upcoming ‘R9’ Reggae album consider to utilize the chance, legendary Jamaican Reggae fusion and Dancehall singer Shaggy turned down the request.
Yes, Shaggy turned down the request to feature on the ‘Diamonds’ singer’s album not because he has bad blood with her or wasn’t willing to, but he did so because he was asked to audition, a thing a singer of his stature refused to do.
“They approached me for the Rihanna project, yeah. There’s a lot of great people involved, but for me, I didn’t need to audition to be on the record,” Shaggy said. “I’ll leave that to younger guys. But from what I hear it should be good.” Shaggy said in a recent interview with UK Daily Star
From the time the ‘Mr Bombastic’ singer made it clear that he turned down the request, it has created a heated argument on social media (twitter in particular) with a big number of users saying that Shaggy should bow down and audition where as others say, it was an act of disrespect to ask Shaggy to audition.
“Lots of big name artists audition for parts in movies, plays, etc. This is not an unreasonable request” Someone tweeted. “Rihanna is a global super star no doubt but then Shaggy is a Legendary Icon.. Rihanna wasn’t brought up well to respect pple above her!” Read another tweet
On the other hand, R9 album whose release date is now a mystery, failed to meet its promised release in 2019. Rihanna spent the whole of last year dodging questions that would have her tell fans the exact album release date. This was a distress and disappointment among her fans, who were expecting the album to be dropped before the the start of a new decade.
Shaggy would have certainly been an excellent addition to Rihanna’s upcoming album but unfortunately this will not happen should Rihanna’s team maintain that he MUST audition.
