When she rose to fame, Selena Gomez built a brand for herself, and it was centred on the name Selena. Much as many millions of fans attribute the name to her, it turns out there was a Selena before, and actually, Gomez was named after her. That Selena is Selena Quintanilla and Gomez found an inspiration in her, hence honouring her.
“My dad and mom were huge fans,” she said in an interview with Sacramento’s NOW 100.5.
“My name was going to be Priscilla, but my cousin actually took the name when she was born six months before me. They actually loved Selena’s music, so they just named me after her.” She added.
She went on to pursue a music career, just like Quintanilla. When the success started coming in, she did what everyone would do-pay homage to the inspiration.
“When I started working, I remember I got to meet her family and I just got super emotional” the singer recalled.
She also visited the fallen singer’s grave to pay tribute. As of now, Gomez has designed two shirts on her Revival Tour to commemorate her namesake.
Selena Quintanilla was a Mexican-American singer, whose talent made her a household name. She tragically and unexpectedly died in 1995, leaving a mark that prompted artistes like Jenifer Lopez to do covers of her songs.
