After days of talking about it, musician-turned-politician Jose Chameleone who is one of the Kampala Lord Mayor aspirants under National Unity Platform (NUP) come 2021 general elections earlier on Tuesday the 1st of September headed to Balintuma Road in Mengo, Kampala to launch his campaign command center office.
The office launch was going on smoothly until a group of Uganda Police officers fired tear gas at the crowd that had gathered outside the office premises.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, they tried to tell the organisers to follow the Ministry of Health’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) but that wasn’t the case thus asking the crowd to leave.
After some minutes, they returned with full force to make sure the launch goes ahead but unfortunately their efforts were futile as Police dispersed them by firing tear gas at them and they were seen fleeing the venue.
Moments after this chaos happened, bitter and disappointed Chameleone real name Joseph Mayanja took to his social media platforms to tell his supporters and also shared a video clip showing the launch interruption by police.
“Our office launch has been interrupted. As I planned to also launch my task force that will in hand walk with me to the coming Lord Mayor elections. Question is What is our crime? Is opening a campaign office an offense? Whatever is in their minds? We can’t be stopped regardless of the physical attack on me and many other colleagues including the press at our premises” Read Chameleone’s statement
The ‘Badilisha’ singer also promised to communicate the next move very soon.
