UCC Finally Licenses Lycamobile As Virtual Network Operator Resumes Operation In Uganda

Mobile virtual network operator, Lycamobile resumed operations after being cleared to operate in Uganda.

The company had suspended the registration of new subscribers because they lacked a license to operate in the country but news from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) indicates that the company is now free to operate legally.

At the meeting held at the UCC Head Office along Spring Road, Bugoloobi Road, Kampala on 11th May 2021, acting Executive Director Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo said that UCC is proud of the milestone Lycamobile had attained and vowed to support them.

In June 2020, the Commission gave a greenlight to all existing telecom operators to apply for license categories of their choice and Lycamobile applied for the National Telecom Operator (NTO) license, which was granted after evaluation of their application by the Commission.

With this license, Lycamobile, is supposed to extend its network coverage to 90% of Uganda’s geographical boundary within five years of getting the license.

They are also expected to list a minimum of 20% of its shares on the Uganda Securities Exchange in accordance with the listing rules and guidelines set by the Capital Markets Authority and the Uganda Securities Exchange.

Speaking at the meeting, Lycamobile Uganda CEO Vinay Choudary said that the company is now set to grow and expand to the different parts of the Pearl Of Africa because having no license was their biggest obstacle.

According to Wikipedia, Lycamobile is a British mobile Virtual network operator operating in 23 countries.

The brand is active in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Uganda, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States
