A cash reward of up to Shs1m per award awaits each winner in all the major categories at this year’s Uganda Entertainment Awards (UEA).
Organizers of the August 19th show at Kampala Serena Hotel in Kampala are apparently looking to extend monetary rewards to at least half of the winners in the 47-category competition.
“We are still debating on which categories to attach the money to, but we are essentially considering the top individual categories in the Music, TV and Film sections,” Kabs Haloha, the awards’ CEO, told us in an exclusive interview today.
Haloha said the cash token is meant to motivate the artistes to aim higher but that the crystal accolades, whose exact look has been reserved for the d-day, are the real deal.
The 23-year-old TV host and his team are working with a fairly big budget this year following a Shs150m endorsement from Pemba Sports Africa (PSA) Ltd.
Owned by controversial businessman Jack Pemba, PSA is also responsible for flying in Liverpool FC legend and ex-England international Robbie Fowler to attend the glitzy event.
Nigerian singer Yemi Alade of the Johnny fame, Tanzania’s Ali Kiba and South African TV host Bonang Matheba are some of the other international celebrities expected to grace the red carpet fete.
Matheba will host the red carpet show for E! in the second only African show to be televised by the American TV giant after the South African Saftas in March.
Eddy Kenzo and Sheebah Karungi are leading this year’s nomination pack with six and five nods, respectively. The pair is facing off for Artiste of the Year and Video of the Year gongs.
A number of local and foreign acts are lined up to entertain guests at the hotly-billed show including Uganda’s Madoxx Sematimba, Ziza Bafana, Bebe Cool and Maurice Kirya.
Tickets to the event are selling at Shs 50,000 and Shs 100,000 for ordinary and VIP seats, respectively. Corporate tables go for Shs 3m each. You can now buy your ticket online at jumia.com or easyticket.co.ug as well as Serena Hotel.
