Uganda Finishes Ahead Of Spain And Argentina At The World University Games In Napoli

The recently concluded international University games saw Uganda taking part and competing with big nations for medals and bragging rights off the field and track.  The event that started on 3rd and went till 14th July had Ugandans participate in athletics, tennis and swimming.

In the concluded Napoli 2019 30th Summer Universiade Games saw Uganda finish 52nd with two medals, silver and bronze, out of the 68 nations that took part in the Italian city. The East African nation finished ahead of power houses Argentina, Spain, Hong Kong and others that only had one medal. It was also ranked 39th by total of medals won.

The team was flagged off by the Vice chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Nawangwe before setting off for Italy.

In the team comprising of university students from Kyambogo, Makerere, Ndejje and Bugema universities that was flagged off by the Vice chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Nawangwe, only two Athletes were able to grab medals from the competitions that turned out to be key.

A silver medal from Shida Leni of Bugema University in 400m and Docus Ajok who won a bronze medal from the 800m race, made the only two medals for the team  that was captained by a Dental surgery student from Makerere University, Nalukwago Judith.

This meant Uganda declined gently in the performance compared to the previous games of 2017, where Uganda finished 35th out of the 63 nations with 3 gold medals and one bronze medal. But still kudos to the young athletes for representing the country.
