Ugandan gold medalists in the just concluded Tokyo 2020 Olympics Joshua Cheptegei and Peruth Chemtai will receive lifetime monthly salary of Ug Shs 5 million per month
The bronze medalist in the games Jacob Kiplimo will get Shs 3 million per month and this is their token of appreciation from Government for representing for Uganda so well
At an event aimed at thanking and welcoming back the medalists that took place at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala on Wednesday, President Museveni said Ugandan sports men and women who win gold medals at a continental level, Commonwealth or Olympic games should be paid a monthly salary of Shs 5 million.
Silver medalists in any of the three categories should also each be paid Shs 3 million while bronze medalists 1 million.
The President also said that he made an order that anybody who wins gold at a continental level, commonwealth, or Olympics should be paid Shs 5m per month, Shs 3m and 1 million for silver & bronze in 2013 but was shocked how the medalists have been paid quarterly all along.
The president used the occasion to give cars to Cheptegei, Chemutai and Kiplimo also promised to build houses for medalists’ parents, thanking them for giving the country talented athletes
Overall, Uganda was ranked 36th in the Olympic Games, which were supposed to have taken place in 2020 but didn’t because of the global outbreak of the COVID-19.
This was Uganda’s best performance at the Olympics since its first participation in 1956 when the games were held in Melobourne.
