Ugandan Music Sales Go Digital With The Launch Of The UgaTunes Application.

A platform to sell, market and promote Ugandan music online was recently launched.

The UgaTunes mobile application, is a music downloading and streaming application that was launched for Ugandan musicians after being locked down for a year without performing due to the spread of Covid19.

UgaTunes also has a website www.ugatunes.com where artiste’s music will be uploaded for viewing at a fee, although as of now it is still being tested with free videos.

Several musicians, comedians, managers and other stakeholders attended the launch that took place at Pope Paul Memorial Centre in Rubaga, Kampala.

Kaye Wisdom, an official of National Cultural Forum at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development said that the platform is one of the measures taken by the Government to help artistes get some money during this time when they are not allowed to perform.

“This is a government initiative that is being sponsored and promoted by the operation wealth creation headed by general salim Saleh to help artists and it will be managed by a team of professionals,” he said at the launch of the app in Kampala recently.

Kaye said they are developing technology that will prevent people with computers from duplicating local artiste’s music and their recordings.

Comedian Kato Lubwama and also the former MP of Rubaga South, Kato Lubwana said that the initiative is a good one but it will only benefit musicians with good music.

“The development is good but it will help a few urban artistes that invest in good audios and music videos,” he said.

However, Rapper Gravity Omutujju disagrees with the initiative on grounds that not every artiste needs it and he is one of them.

He claims he told the promoters of the application to give him Ug Shs 1 billion to give them rights to sell his songs but they didn’t agree with his demands.

“The only solution is to open up the entertainment industry because it is the best way to get quick money. The launch of the app is good but it’s a long term strategy that needs time to be promoted,” he said at the launch of the event.
