With thousands of Ugandans turning up for the 2016 MTN marathon yesterday, the city was painted yellow as participants assembled early morning to run for a good cause as proceeds go to charity in helping bring fresh water to Kampala.
It was also an opportunity for the dot com group to just show up for photo opportunities and selfies to update their social media status. Some simply came to mix and mingle while others came for the fun of it with one particular crazy runner showing up with his favourite sheep.
Back to the serious end of business, this year’s MTN Marathon got many people smiling at the end as Ugandans dominated most of the races 10km, 21km and 42km as well as enjoyed all the fun that comes with the now popular marathon. After the previous editions being dominated by Kenyan athletes, Ugandans came back strongly and almost swept all the categories apart from the women’s’ 42 kilometre race.
The 13th edition of the marathon was set alight as soon as Elisha Chemutai and Mercyline Chelangat crossed the finish line to set the tone for the other Ugandan runners to the delight of the organisers MTN who were visibly impressed with the big turn up. The two both walked away with 1.5Million in prize money for their efforts after posting impressive times on the clock.
However, it was the more gruelling 42 Kilometre race where all eyes were on. The Kenyan ladies won it while the Ugandan men took all the first three positions. Bernard Cheptoch 2:19:13(14Million), Joshua Bekele 2:21:40(7Million), and David Cherop 2:22:04(3.5Million) were the heroes for the home crowd who cheered and gave a loud applause during the awards ceremony.
Ugandans also dominated the 21 Kilometre races while Roofings Team 1 took the corporate challenge whose prize money of 3million they gave away to charity of their choice. There was a celebratory mood all over the Kololo Ceremonial grounds with the party continuing till late.
