On Saturday the 9th of October 2021, it made 59 years since Uganda gained her Independence from Britain and as usual, a big event to celebrate this day is always held but since last year, the celebration for this day has been virtual due the spread of the deadly Covid-19.
Lovers of Ugandan music were treated to best of virtual performances from local artistes, like Sheebah Karungi, King Saha, Ziza Bafana, Irene Ntale, Azawi, Kenneth Mugabi, Nince Henry, Recho Rey, Crysto Panda, Ykee Benda, Lydia Jazmine and Eezzy without forgetting Djs, MCs, and comedians like Dj Roja, Ronnie McVex, Casmir among others who also kept the event hyped up.
Much as we were celebrating 59 years independent as a country, Nile Breweries’ Nile Special, the official sponsors of this concert also used it to celebrate dependence on each other and urged public to get vaccinated, continue wearing masks, social distance, wash and sanitize hands so as to beat Covid-19 which has robbed us of our freedoms to party among other things.
“We celebrate DEPENDENCE, because to beat the pandemic that has taken away many of our freedoms, we need each other more than ever before. Let’s get vaccinated, wear masks, social distance, wash and sanitize our hands. And when we finally get our freedoms back, we will truly appreciate and celebrate independence”- Read a statement from Nile Special
The Ug @59 Concert was organised by Ministry of ICT and National Guidance. It was broadcast live on NBS Television in two sessions with the first kicking off at 4 PM to 7, and the second from 10 PM to 2 AM.
Going by the viewership online, the concert was well attended by Ugandans as they celebrated their independence and also watched their favourite local artistes, Dj, comedians, MCs and dancers entertain them.
