Arsenal’s new Striker Danny Welbeck scored his first professional hat-trick as 10-man Arsenal swept aside Galatasaray in the Champions League at the Emirates stadium last night.
The England striker bought from Manchester United at 16M on transfer deadline day, excellent throughout, stabbing in a first-half opener from a sublime Alexis Sanchez pass after 22 minutes before side-footing a second after shaking off a defender in a strong individual effort.
Alexis Sanchez then curled home after running through the Galatasaray defence unchallenged before Welbeck clipped in his third from a brilliantly timed run.
Burak Yilmaz scored a penalty after Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off for a foul on the same player which was just nothing more than a consolation.
The win was Arsenal’s first in this year’s Champions League and means they have three points from two Group D games after losing the opening match 2-0 to group leaders Borusia Dortmund in Germany.
An attack minded side which had Welbeck playing in his favoured central role supported by the pace and creativity of Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave Wenger the perfect moment as he celebrated 18 years since being appointed Arsenal Manager. They simply tore a miserable Galatasaray defence into shreds in the first half.
Arsenal now has three points from two games and are second to Dortmund in group C. They entertain leaders Chelsea next in the premier league this weekend in what is expected to be a hotly contested London derby.
