A first-time encounter with baby-faced and fresh, innocent-looking youngster Shawn Maine may throw you into a state of confusion especially if you have heard his music before, because you may fail to put the face to the voice.
The two are contrastingly different for; Shawn the shy guy has a big and confident voice that echoes like rolling thunder in the distant valleys that bring the heavy tropical rains.
The fast-rising and talented singer is definitely destined for the skies which may not even be the limit for him if he stays focused and maintains his discipline and consistency.
Shawn Maine real name Shawn Bisangwa, announced his entry onto the music scene with a cameo appearance at Blankets and Wine Kampala with his distinctly brittle voice blaring through the speakers at the Indian Association Grounds on 15th December 2019 where he shared the stage with American superstar Jidenna.
Shawn, surprised many with his spectacular performance especially with his vocal prowess, and straight away etched his name among artistes to look out for in the near future.
The 20-year old Afro-fusion artiste who started his music career in 2018 just after graduating from Aga Khan High School did not sit on his laurels but continued with his development carrying on intensive practice and studio work that resulted in the release of some dope soothing music.
With some singles like ‘Stay’ in which featured J Wats and Producer X, “I can’t be Myself (feat. Lagum), ‘’Show You’, ‘Control’’ (Feat. Mootownoh) and “It’s Crazy” already doing well online and music streaming platforms Shawn has now released his debut EP (Extended Play) ‘After The Pain’ with an impressive collection of powerful sounds.
“The EP like the title suggests is about moving on from pain, moving on from heartbreak. It’s about trying to find love and happiness after moving on from pain and heartbreak. You’ll notice in most of the songs, the storyline is about moving on. It’s also about self-awareness and other stuff about trust”. Shawn told Chano8 in an exclusive chat.
The EP which has been in production for a full year has 5 songs which stress an aura of propensity to love; augmenting his deep touching message of pain that he wants to move on from. He pours it all out with a soulful touch while inviting the listener to join him in crying with him.
When you listen to the songs ‘See Me Now’ in which he introduces the bitter-sweet love story, he then stresses the chase in ‘Run’, ’Do It’, where there is a roller-coaster of emotions, you feel his pain too yet you are happy to do so because you know it’s best to let go. And ’I hope’ takes you into a journey of self-awareness and discovery, His sweet melodious deep voice sometimes brings out the goosebumps but ‘After 5 closes it all with a glimmer of hope as he finally finds love.
He fuses contemporary AfroPop, Soul and RnB to create his own unique sound and in his own words describes his style as “Afro-fusion with a blend of Soul and RnB”. He looks up to Sam Smith, John Legend and Summer Walker as his musical inspirations which heavily reflect in his style.
The brand new EP which is now available on different music streaming sites like Apple, Spotify, Tidal and Deezer was unveiled on Thursday at an exclusive listening session at Kenji’s Mojo in Kamwokya in which a few journalists, DJs and media personalities were invited to have a feel.
Shawn had some acoustic versions of the songs performed live as he narrated the inspiration behind each with guitar backing by Baraka Joshua.
“So far it’s been a great journey [in the music industry] and a blessing from God with what I have achieved so far and I thank those who have supported me in this”. He said
Asked how he intends to market Shawn’s style of music since Ugandans rarely embrace this type of genre, manager Lobster said they will use all avenues especially online to get his music out there. And when the world embraces him, Ugandans will definitely embrace him too.
With the entertainment industry still at a standstill due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Shawn, like most artistes used his time to plan, strategize, and do more studio work. The plan for the near future is to do a few collaborations here and there, then and finalize his debut album which is expected to drop early next year.
This project was carefully knitted and brought to life with the help of professionals who worked closely with Shawn like producers; Reymacc, and Producer X while the mastering was fine-tuned by Baru. You can get to listen to this piece on all downloading platforms.
